About the Artist

I am a 12-year-old boy with Asperger's syndrome. If you don't know what this is, I'll tell you. Some people call it "autism lite," but it means I see the world differently and have a hard time understanding how to behave by the rules I don't get. I also have serial obsessions; like clocks, elevators, doors and money. I began drawing politicians because of my money obsession. I learned that the guys on the $1, $2, $5, $20 and $50 bills were U.S. presidents but Hamilton and Franklin, the guys on the $10 and $100 bills, were not. I kept drawing presidents, and as I did, I learned about them. Then, I learned there are people whose job is to influence the presidents, like rich people, politicians and news people. These are powerful people who influence how we live our lives today — right now! I like to watch MSNBC, CNN, Frontline and 60 Minutes. I guess these shows are my new obsession. I didn't think about that until now! Some of the people I draw are good-looking and some are ugly. It took me a long time to understand that just because someone is young and attractive, it doesn't mean that person is smart or good for our country. That's why I don't listen to Fox News. My drawings are how I see people. Sometimes people who are good-looking are ugly inside. And some people with wrinkles and gray hair are still beautiful. I live in Vermont where there are more people with gray hair than in California, where I used to live. It snows here in the fall, winter and spring; and bugs live indoors with the people in the spring, summer and fall. I moved here last August; I used to live under the Hollywood sign. By the way, I like the color yellow. I think that was my first obsession.
