About the artist
1938–2006
Born in Port-au-Prince, Fritzner Alphonse worked as a leather tanner until the age of 36. He was introduced to painting by a childhood friend, the artist Calixte Henri. A repeated theme in his paintings is the female figure, especially Creole women, which he depicts in numerous variations. Alphonse's work has been exhibited throughout the Caribbean, as well as in Mexico, Europe, Japan, and the U.S. He was also commissioned to create a large mural in Miami, Florida. In the 1990s, the artist was spotlighted in a Bon Appétit magazine feature article.
