about the artist
René Haspil, born in 1954, apprenticed with renowned painter of haitian markets, Laurent Casimir. He eventually developed his own style of painting, one that evokes the abstract market scenes of Casimir, but which have Haspil’s unmistakable stamp—a sense of luminosity eminating from every scene he paints. The artist coats his canvases with plaster and then paints over the dried plaster, which render a depth of field and originality to the work. Having suffered a debilitating stroke in 2009, Haspil is no longer able to paint.
